James started exhibiting and winning awards at the age of eight.  His mother was a docent at the North Carolina Museum of Art where young James spent much of his time wandering through the galleries.  At the age of ten his family moved to Atlanta where he enrolled in the Fay Gold Art Studio.  He attended the arts based Galloway Middle School and he remembers the moment he first heard the names Michelangelo and Leonardo.  James went to two colleges as an art major after which he enrolled in Ateliers, first in Boston and then Florence, Italy.  Post Atelier, James pursued study as an apprentice working with Italian master Romano Stefanelli and Ben Long of North Carolina (both students of Pietro Annigoni).  He assisted Long on eight frescoes that can be found throughout North Carolina.  James holds the lineage and mastery of both the French Academic and Italian Renaissance traditions.

“I just saw the portrait yesterday and it looks fabulous. Everyone is happy with it, including the most important person, Mike Cooper!  I love the frame, too.  Well done!  I enjoyed working with you.”
- Marcia Eldredge, Brewster Academy

“Artist James Daniel's paintings jump out at you with their clarity, truth, and mastery.  I'm often compelled to stop in front of one of James' many pieces hanging in my home to take in the full weight of their beauty.”
- Stuart Kirsner, CEO and Owner of Stuart Estate Planning, Coconut Creek, FL

“We couldn’t be more satisfied with James’ work in creating a pencil drawing of one of our top donors for our Gallery of Benefactors.  These drawings are not easily done, but James turned the piece around in just a few days.  He made the process very easy, even though he is located several states away.  Our donor was happy with the drawing, and so were we.”
- Bob Pierce, University of Southern Mississippi

"We were delighted to work with James Daniel on a recognition portrait for one of our special donors.  We appreciate his interest in feedback during the process, the ease of working with him, how quickly he was able to get the final portrait to us, and, most importantly, how pleased our donor was with our gift. We would definitely use him again for future projects."
- Nancy Strouse, Senior Associate Vice President, Development, Executive Director, UNLV Foundation

“James’ artwork has been an ongoing source of joy and inspiration for our family.  We have three children that James has created multiple portraits of.  Each year we commission James to create at least one, usually three or four, portrait masterpieces.

James is a well-rounded or “complete” artist.  In addition to his portraits, he creates many non-portrait artworks that we have a growing collection of.  I highly recommend James as your “artist of choice” when it comes to traditional heirloom portraits, and, when is comes to building a collection of master works that will forever enrich your home and legacy.”
- Natalie Bacon, Assistant Attorney General & Owner Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC)

“The portrait is perfect!!! So beautiful! Thank you very much.  It is absolutely lovely.  Our former Head of School will be on campus next weekend and we can’t wait to show it to him!  Thanks for your beautiful artistry.”
- Sarah DeBenedictis, New Hampton School

James, let me make your Thanksgiving – the Portrait arrived this afternoon and I just got through unpacking it.  It is in great shape and have shown several of the staff and they are just delighted as I am!  You are quite a master and we appreciate you working with us.  Thank you so much for your artistry.
